In Flanders Field

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day.  I will be at Gore Park at 11 a.m. to honor those valiant people who died defending what they believe in.  I’m a big fan of documentaries that deal with the wars, especially World War II.  Every time I watch I try to put myself in the place of those soldiers and what they had to deal with.  Simply horrific!  They saw things no one should have to see.

I often wonder how I would have done in that kind of a situation.  I really have no idea: would I fight, would I kill, would I run-I hope I never have to find out!  Thank you all for your sacrifice.  You have done yourselves proud!

RIP Mother Doreen

Just received a telephone call from my dear ex Tree; her mother Ada had just passed away.  I knew Ada had been on shaky ground for quite a while now.  As a matter of fact, Glory (who rents my house with Owen) had called me yesterday to let me know she heard Ada (who I still call Ma) had taken a turn and was not doing very well.

Ma & I hit it off really well the first time I met her.  Even after Tree & I parted ways, we kept in touch with telephone calls & letters.  I’m so glad I got to see her a couple of years ago when I went to visit the Doreens with Trish.  Ma had just turned 82 last month.  Here’s an amazing thing for you to consider- Ma was very close with her sister Nellie.  They had the same birthday.  Nellie passed away several years ago & Ma Died on the Same Day!  Makes You Think.

Definitely going to miss this little old lady.  She had so many talents: great cook, musician, card player, mother, Native spokesperson & dancer-the list goes on.  You will be sorely missed!

A Trip to the Dentist

I remember as a kid absolutely hating to go to the dentist.  Nothing hurt more than those huge needles they used to use.  I even remember when I was around 6 or 7, bolting out of the dentist’s chair (Dr. Gaik) and running down the hallway outside his office door.  Bastard actually caught me and gave me the needle to freeze my mouth right there in the hallway!

It got so bad, that as an adult I just stopped going to the dentist.  Did that for about eight years and then my mouth started to hurt like you don’t know what!  Held off as long as I could but eventually ended up making an appointment.  11 cavities!  I asked the dentist, my current dentist-Dr. Markowski, if he could handle all the work in one appointment.  He looked at me and asked me if I was sure-so off we went!  The only thing I remember is that my mouth was so frozen, when I got home I had absolutely no control over my drooling.  Had to sit at the kitchen table with a Tupperware bowl underneath my chin to catch it all.  My poor mother had to empty it 3 or four times!

Ever since that, I’ve made it a habit to see the dentist twice a year as recommended.  Saw him last week for a cleaning and told him about the problem I was having with food getting caught underneath a cavity and causing some discomfort.  "A food trap" he responded.  Set up an appointment for today where he drilled out some of the old filling and took care of the dastardly trap.  I sat there as he froze my mouth thinking how much less pain there is now than there was when I was a kid.  Barely felt the needle!  That’s something I’ve noticed for a few years now-thank goodness dentistry has advanced.

Dental care itself is so advanced nowadays.  Dear Brother Joseph, who is a brisk 38 Has Never Had a Cavity!  Simply amazing!  All I can say is, going to the dentist now isn’t nearly as stressful as it used to be for me.  Thank goodness!

The Family Gets Together at Mike & Cindy’s

Got an invitation from the lovely Cindy to attend a family get-together at their place.  Took place this past weekend.  Everyone was there except Nephew Andrew-Andrew, you don’t know what you missed!  Cindy prepared a delicious meal which included pasta & meat sauce, French bread and a couple of salads.  Actually, one of the salads came courtesy of the lovely Kathryn & Brother Joe.

Sister June brought a lovely dessert which included Kahlúa, whipped cream & chocolate mousse.  Yours truly made sure everyone had a bit of a glow by bringing in a couple of bottles of wine.  Everything was just fantastic!  So nice when the whole family gets together like that.  Got a few pictures from the event, courtesy of Lauren who was more or less appointed to be the official photographer.  Thank you Lauren!

Very Scary Stuff!

Got a visit from "The Count" the other night.  He was in town on Halloween visiting some friends.  We caught up on old times and shared a couple of pints.  Then, he took off to spend the rest of the night with his Mummy.

Managed to get him to pose for a picture before he left.  Check it out!
