RIP Mother Doreen

Just received a telephone call from my dear ex Tree; her mother Ada had just passed away.  I knew Ada had been on shaky ground for quite a while now.  As a matter of fact, Glory (who rents my house with Owen) had called me yesterday to let me know she heard Ada (who I still call Ma) had taken a turn and was not doing very well.

Ma & I hit it off really well the first time I met her.  Even after Tree & I parted ways, we kept in touch with telephone calls & letters.  I’m so glad I got to see her a couple of years ago when I went to visit the Doreens with Trish.  Ma had just turned 82 last month.  Here’s an amazing thing for you to consider- Ma was very close with her sister Nellie.  They had the same birthday.  Nellie passed away several years ago & Ma Died on the Same Day!  Makes You Think.

Definitely going to miss this little old lady.  She had so many talents: great cook, musician, card player, mother, Native spokesperson & dancer-the list goes on.  You will be sorely missed!

  1. Hi Tree
Unfortunately I never had the opportunity to meet your Mom. She sounds like a great lady and I’m so sorry for you and your family. From Tony’s description of her talents it definitely sounds like mother like daughter, well maybe except for the cooking skills.

  3. If I remember right, and I know I do, YOU dickhead, and YOU Tony, used to go for seconds and thirds when I made dinner for you guys
One thing you forgot to mention about Mom and Aunt Nellie was that they also had sons born on the same day - their birthdays.
BIG NIA:WEN KOA to Trish for coming down - but did you have to bring Tony? Now there is no more corn soup left!!!!

  4. You are right Tree. But the reason I asked for seconds was so that I could have some samples to take to either the hospital (to test for food poisoning) or the police (for evidence). On the other hand, Dickhead just appreciates a free meal.

Yes Trish, thanks for your help. The corn soup was simply superb. Only wish there was more to bring home. I know Mother Doreen would want it that way!

All kidding aside, Tree it was nice to see the family again-albeit, wish it could have been for better reasons. The service for your mother was very touching. Gabrielle seems to be the future replacement for Ma. I know Christmas will be tough this year but be strong. Looking forward to your visit in a couple of weeks.

  5. Maybe its just my memory but I can’t remember asking for seconds or, heaven help me, thirds. In fact I got to tell you I don’t recollect you ever cooking, which I always figured was a good thing. As for a free meal, I have no idea how Tony would know how I feel on that subject since at our monthly lunches I always get stuck paying for Tony and whoever he brings along. You can not believe how quick that man can move when he sees the bill coming.

  6. Dickhead - it IS just your memory.
Where the heck is Lorne when I need him?? - I know that he would not have forgotten that first Chinese food supper that I cooked! Tony will have forgotten because it went down so fast, I don’t think he even tasted it.
But YES, Charles, I do know what you mean about Tony - He shocked all of us at the table on Friday when he OFFERED to PAY for the postage if I would send him a jar of Corn Soup!
Isn’t that amazing - I just used “Tony” and “Offered to Pay” in the same sentence!!!!

  7. I don’t know about your cooking Trees but you sure make a mean Tai Mai. Great to see one of the “Out Laws” but the circumstances were bittersweet. I also loved her dearly and never considered her my Mother in Law……Always “Mom”. My heart breaks for all my “Sisters and Brothers” Iwill love you Forever!!!! Your Sister Always Lynda XO

  8. TY Lynda! I do admit to being a much better bartender than cook! I would like to point out however, that I have NEVER cooked trees! LOL! Love ya’ too!
Tony - sorry, I think I just hijacked your thread.

  9. Don’t worry Tree, I realize you had no evil intention in the hijacking of this thread. Seems that hijacking things runs common in Native blood nowadays. Thank goodness I still have the bill of sale for my computer! And about me being “cheap”-with all the pets we had, I was just trying to make sure the food budget covered everyone. Now I don’t have the pets, but I have several “children” (Trish & Paulo are perfect examples) to support. Just trying to be a good parent!

  10. Hey! Unlike another family member who shall remain nameless, I have not yet hijacked a police station. (He is out on bail right now and doing well. I am so proud of him!)
