How Much Would You Tip?

Now, for some reason that I just can’t figure out, people often put the tag of "cheap" on yours truly.  Oh, the injustice of life!  But, had a very interesting conversation with a friend of mine who tends to be what I consider an overzealous tipper.  15% she says, that’s what it’s supposed to be!  I was at a meal with her (Trish darling, it was delicious) and a friend of hers.  Her friend decided to take care of the tip.  The meal was $68.  The tip: $30!  Trish could see by the look on my face that I was stunned.  "That’s because you are so cheap" she responded.

So I ask you, and please be honest.  Let’s say you were at a nice restaurant with a friend and paying for the meal.  The bill came to $100.  What kind of tip would you leave?  I told Trish I would put down $10 and feel quite comfortable with that. She just laughed & rolled her eyes.  So again, I ask: what kind of tip would you have left?

  1. Trish is right in one respect Tony. You are just about the cheapest man on the planet. However a $30 tip for a $68 meal is really over the top, thats more than 40%. Who were you out with Clint Howard (I’ll let you figure that one out).
On a $68 meal I would have left $12. It rounds out that tab nicely and is more than 15%. On $100 I’d leave between $15 and $20 depending on service and quality of food. Its no wonder you never go back to the same restaurant twice. And I can’t even imagine you going to a place where the bill would reach $100 if you had to pay.

  2. Me? Cheap? I beg to differ! Re: Clint-it’s not coming to me right now, only that he is Ron’s brother. And by the way, $100 for a meal is nothing to me-after all, sometimes they call me Diamond Quack

  3. I know $100 restaurant tab is nothing for you when you are being treated however when you have to pay thats probably your total for 4 or 5 meals out. Re: Clint - see if cousin Jan can help you (theres your hint).

  4. I agree with Charles, about tipping $15-20 that is. I would never call you cheap and I know for a fact that you go back to the same restaurant lots of times.

  5. My poor Dickhead, just ask the lovely Trish how many times I’ve treated her at that kind of establishment. And about Clint, well, it took our telephone conversation to ring the bell. Janet, your words of support are truly appreciated! I have a witness now.

  6. The only reason Janet won’t call you cheap is that she is just so nice. Unfortunately for you, Trish and I are not, so deal with it. And congrats on more or less solving the Clint Howard reference..

  7. Well, I must say a $30 tip on a $68 bill is way to much. The proper amount to tip is 15% of the bill before tax. So with my calculations the tip should have been $8.87. Now if everyone had a “Wizard” we wouldn,t have this problem, watch out for the “Willard” though, some of them don’t have the number 5 on the key pad and it could ruin you.

  8. As I have already admitted to Cousin Jan, I made a mistake on my initial thread. The tip left was $20 not $30-still though, way too much! I don’t need a Wizard or Willard to figure that out. All I need is a pen & paper. No, wait a minute-he took the pen!
